Saint Matthias Episcopal Church - Soup Hour
Every weekday from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM we serve a hot meal to anyone who wishes to eat. Some guests are long time residents of the streets. Some are only recently homeless. Others live in nearby low income housing. There are also families, elders, and people who have jobs but do not make enough money to feed themselves the entire month. So at the end of the month we have more guests, but overall we average around 70 people served a day, through the work of about eight volunteers per day.
We have programs for all ages — from the littlest tyke in the nursery through adult classes held several times a year on Sunday mornings and Thursday nights during Lent. Our Bible study on Wednesday morning is lively and a lot of fun as folks are encouraged to express their individual opinions on Scripture. We also have special programs during the week for both our prime timers and our youth.
And we believe strongly in social justice and community outreach. For example, at our Soup Hour we feed the hungry five days a week, for a total of 20,000 meals a year. We also administer a mail service for approximately 300 homeless neighbors, provide sanitary kits and other items most of the rest of us take for granted, and host a nurse practitioner who meets with out guests every other Tuesday.
In short — in the words of our mission statement — with faith and joy we seek God with open minds, serve all in the spirit of Christ, and share God's love with kind hearts through open discussion, common worship, and compassionate action. If these words pique your curiosity, then there is likely a place for you here, no matter your background. As we note every week before we take communion, “Wherever you are on your journey of faith, all are welcome. Won't you please come?"
